Traditional light fittings are commonly designed so the whole lamp has to be changed after end-of-life or if you want to change to a more energy-friendly light source. With the sustainable design of the Fischer Family lamps this can be avoided. The different components can be dismounted and reused time after some time, since the components are either mechanically or magnetically connected. This design makes it possible to disassemble and refit new components, and that is what makes the Fischer Family Series circular. At the same time all the components can be reused.

The Fischer Family series became a reality when Fischer Lighting started a cooperation with the architect and innovation company 3XN/GXN and Plastix from plastics industry. 3XN/GXN designed the sustainable lamp and Plastix provides plastic granules from old fishing nets.

Fischer Lighting has chosen plastic from old fishing nets as one of the key materials, as this avoids the nets being burned or thrown into the ocean. Furthermore, the lamp is made from old lamps as the most sustainable materials we can use are the ones that we have already produced. This makes Fischer Family Series one of the world’s most sustainable lamps

• All the components of the lamp can be disassembled piece by piece eliminating the throw-away culture just because one component needs to be changed.
• Reusing fishing nets for new plastic products minimizes the use of fossil materials, and thereby reduces the amount of energy needed in the production of plastic. Fischer Lighting generates 5.5 times less CO2 by reusing fishing nets compared to using new plastic made of fossil materials. At the same time, the lamps reduce the energy consumption up to 80 per cent.
• When Fischer Lighting buys plastic granules made of old fishing nets from Plastix, it demonstrates an example of how corporations can create business out of plastic waste by turning it into a resource. One lamp utilizes approximately 0.5 m2 of used fishing nets. If more industries did the same, it would help to keep the oceans clean of plastic waste as this is a great danger for the ocean and its biodiversity

• It can be an obstacle to find suppliers, that produce materials matching the circular principles. Many corporations want to develop circular business models, but lack collaborators, who can contribute with the right circular materials. Fischer Lighting tested many materials, such as old jeans and coffee grounds, before they found that Plastix’ plastic granules from old fishing nets, matched circular principles.
• Reused products are often considered poor compared to new products. Fischer Lighting hopes that this lamp will bust this old myth.
