Shipping is by far the world’s most efficient form of transport but, because more than 85% of the world’s traded goods travel by sea, it still has a major environmental impact. Shipping is a big sector; the approximately 100,000 ships account for 3% of greenhouse gas emissions.

AkzoNobel has the history of being a pioneer of sustainability in the marine industry. We work closely with other key industry players to create transparency on sustainable best practices in the supply chain, bringing new sustainable marine products and initiatives to the market and reducing carbon emissions. As a market leader and industry thought leader, AkzoNobel develops products and initiatives to help lowering carbon emissions of the world’s shipping fleets, reducing emissions of biocides into the oceans, and reducing ocean pollution.

For decades, our team of chemical engineers, material scientists, biologists, hydrodynamic experts, physicists and –nowadays – digital innovation specialists have been working on projects like biomimicry, drone technology, robotics, intelligent sensors and digital innovation, we now have the ability to care for vessels at agreed performance levels with our advanced coatings and technology.

• Marine industry’s first and only biocide-free foul-release technology Intersleek is an excellent example of our innovative product development to reach this goal.

1.  Intersleek reduces fuel consumption up to 9%, resulting in reduced emissions and fuel consumption
2.  Ship owners and operators using Intersleek are eligible for industry’s first carbon credits program that enables them to turn their carbon emission reductions into cash. So far more than 126,000 carbon credits worth more than $500,000 have been awarded by AkzoNobel
3.  So far, more than 5,500 vessels have been coated with Intersleek products. It has helped ship owners and operators to save ten million tons of fuel and 32 million tons of CO2

• We have teamed up with The Ocean Cleanup organization to remove ocean pollution. We provide our biocide-free foul-release technology to all of their cleaning systems.

• While shipping is the most effective global form of transportation, it has a major environmental impact. Shipping is a big sector; the approximately 100,000 ships account for 3% of greenhouse gas emissions.
• Currently no binding emission targets in place. A strong and global legislative framework is required to lead the world’s shipping industry to contribute to a more sustainable future. The industry anticipates increasing restrictions on use of materials, avoidance of human contact, and minimal release of materials to the environment.
• Limited public funding for removal of ocean pollution.
