Description
For many years, Saica and Auchan have worked together on an innovative co-working project that has allowed the reintroduction of recycled materials that until now were sent to landfills. The key to success has been to achieve a better segregation in the origin with an optimization of several internal processes and procedures. The project has already been implemented in Madrid and soon in Barcelona.
Furthermore, cardboard is converted back into recycled paper to make new boxes, low-density polyethylene in new pellets, inert waste in energy and organic waste in compost and energy too.
Added value
- Preservation of natural resources, biodiversity, energy efficiency are priorities set out in the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) established by the United Nations and objectives to be met by the different EU member states. In this regard, Saica and Auchan Retail Spain have joined forces to advance in the field of Sustainability and realise the concept of circular economy.
- Saica believes and invests heavily in this, turning waste into a source of profitability and sustainability. Actions developed in Madrid’s supermarkets have managed to reduce drastically the materials that have been sent to landfills. The project, developed in December and January, allowed 11 stores in Madrid to send all waste to processes of recovery and treatment, avoiding the landfill. From February 2017, the project will be expanded in the supermarkets of Catalonia and both have agreed to continue the expansion in the places where it is technically and economically feasible.
Challenges
- Just as we do with cardboard, one of the priority objectives for this year is to close the circle with the plastic. We are working together to take recycling a step further because we are no longer satisfied with only recycling the plastic. The ultimate goal is that Saica recycles plastic in order to be reused as sustainable flexible packaging in Auchan Retail Spain.
